Like the practice and performance of Emergent Improvisation, the Triptychs gallery explores the ways in which natural processes underlie artistic expression. The forms and structures we create as humans often mirror the designs and shapes of the natural world. When pictured together these images illuminate the harmonic connections between the self organizing patterns formed by the dancing ensemble and those that reside in nature.
The first Triptychs of this kind were created by Susan Sgorbati, Katie Martin, and Jake Meginsky as visual accompaniments to the Emergent Improvisation website. Later, Susan Sgorbati, Emily Climer, and Marie Lynn Haas compiled a second set of Triptychs for their Contact Quarterly chapbook publication, Emergent Improvisation; On the nature of spontaneous composition where dance meets science. Marie Lynn Haas created the larger collection of Triptychs featured in this gallery.
